Slipping and SlidingA little care and attention could save millions Two of the most common causes of accidents on premises where the public have access are slips and trips. These produce more claims for compensation than any other type and are fertile ground for compensation chasing companies. A simple slip or trip can lead to a totally disproportionate claim. It is therefore important that businesses where there is public access take all possible steps to minimise risks. This can include not only the buildings but also car parks, yards and walk ways. Some issues to consider are:-
All employees need to be briefed as to the risks involved and trained to take immediate action if anything is dropped or hazards are left in open areas. Special care needs to be taken when doing work on the premises or employing subcontractors. Work must be carefully planned and it is crucial to select a competent contractor and ensure that if you are using your own employees that they have the skills to do the work. It is important to ensure that contractors have adequate insurance. We can help here if required. Often it is better to carry out work when the premises are closed to the public but if this is not possible there should be complete segregation between contractors and customers. Finally if an accident does happen, it is prudent to try and reduce the impact. Act concerned, be sympathetic without admitting responsibility, providing reassurance where appropriate. Call for assistance and try and arrange transport home if required. Take names and address and send a ‘token of regret’ e.g. a bunch of flowers or voucher and above all record all the circumstances and the extent of any injury. There was a recent case when a member of the public slipped on a flower petal in front of a flower stall in a station. Damages were eventually awarded at £1.5m. Slips and trips can be very expensive and most can be avoided with care and attention.
