Do I need it?
⚠️ Employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement for all employers. Public liability insurance is a legal requirement for horse riding establishments.
Public liability insurance is highly recommended for any business which:
- Has premises that members of the public, customers or clients can visit (or if you work from home and people visit for work reasons); or
- Organises off-site events or activities attended by the public.
Products liability insurance is recommended for businesses which design, manufacture or supply any physical product which is either sold or given away for free. You can still be held liable in certain circumstances for faulty products even where you aren’t the manufacturer, so it’s worth checking whether you should obtain this cover.
What does it cover?
Employers’ liability insurance covers you for damages to your employees if they are injured or become ill as a result of their work for you. This includes all permanent, contract and seasonal employees and labour-only subcontractors, and should also include temporary staff, work experience and volunteers.
Public liability insurance covers you in the event of a claim by a member of the public due to injury and/or damage to property sustained as a result of your business activities.
Products liability insurance covers you for damages in the event that a product manufactured, sold, supplied, hired out, repaired, renovated, serviced, altered, erected, installed or treated on your behalf causes injury, disease or illness, or damage to property.
